Louis van Gaal ‘ashamed’ of Man Utd contract as his wife lifts lid on private talks with Ed Woodward

Louis van Gaal’s wife has discussed how the Netherlands boss came to manage Manchester United following talks with ex-chief executive Ed Woodward.

The Dutchman replaced David Moyes at Manchester United ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

He left his role as Netherlands head coach to take his first managerial job in the Premier League.

Van Gaal is a one-of-a-kind character and several viral moments came during his time at Old Trafford.

He helped them win the FA Cup in 2016 but that was the best it got for him in Manchester as they finished fourth and fifth in the Premier League in his two seasons in charge.

Van Gaal’s wife – Truss – has now revealed how talks went with Woodward before he took the Man Utd job.

She has suggested that Van Gaal “was almost ashamed” to ask how much he would be earning at United.

“He just doesn’t think money is that important,” Truss told Nouveau (via Sport Witness).

“I remember when Manchester United were interested in Louis. Ed Woodward, the big boss, wanted to meet with Louis and his business manager in a hotel.

“Louis said, ‘I don’t have an agent and you can just come to my house in Noordwijk.’ So the man sits here, where you are sitting now, I put down a cup of coffee and a slice of cake for him and go into the village.

“But I enter our flat and there Louis is already waiting for me. With a proud face and his arms outstretched, he shouted: ‘Here is the new manager of Manchester United!’ He even opened champagne, even though neither of us likes that very much.

“At one point I say, ‘So, what are we going to earn?’ That’s her again, he thought, so that hadn’t been discussed yet. ‘What are you saying?’ I said. But then he thinks I have dollar signs in my eyes.

“A few days later, Woodward called again, Louis joked: ‘My wife wants to know what I will earn, hahaha. And then he doesn’t negotiate. He’s just almost ashamed of the amount he’s getting.”

Van Gaal took five years out of the game after being sacked a couple of days after United’s FA Cup triumph.

But he returned last year as he decided to become the manager of the Netherlands once again.

The veteran has guided his country to the quarter-finals of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

His side will look to dump Argentina out of the competition in the last eight and in turn this will end Lionel Messi’s hopes of winning the World Cup.

The winners of this tie will face Brazil or Croatia in the semi-finals next week.
