Watch: Amid strong headwinds of a global inflation, Centre reduces excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 and on diesel by Rs 6/litre

Amid strong headwinds of a global inflation, FM Nirmala Sitharaman announces a host of measures. These measures hopefully would provide relief to the ‘common man’. The announcements came in a series of tweets from the FM’s personal Twitter handle. Watch!

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the customs duty changes in raw materials and intermediaries for iron and steel will “reduce their prices”.

Besides, the duty on import of raw materials used in the plastic industry has also been reduced to lower the cost of domestic manufacturing.

While import duty on naptha has been cut to 1 per cent, from 2.5 per cent, the duty on propylene Oxide has been halved to 2.5 per cent.

The import duty on Polymers of Vinyl Chloride (PVC) has been cut to 7.5 per cent, from 10 per cent, currently.

Announcing the customs duty cut on plastic, Sitharaman said the levies are being cut on raw materials and intermediaries where the import dependence is high.

“This will result in reduction of cost of final products,” she tweeted.

AMRG & Associates Senior Partner Rajat Mohan said steep reduction in import duty on these products would help arrest high inflation.

“Global economies are ailing due to rising debt and high inflation. In light of collapsing weak developing economies due to high inflation, the Indian government has taken multiple measures to provide relief from the high prices of petrol, diesel, coal, iron, steel and plastic,” Mohan said.
